Convicted political fixer, and Obama’s personal real estate fairy, Antoin “Tony” Rezko is talking, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, which reports:
Federal prosecutors have asked a judge to indefinitely postpone Tony Rezko’s sentencing on corruption charges — admitting for the first time they are undergoing discussions with the political fund-raiser.
In a motion filed today, Assistant U.S. Attorney Reid Schar asked a federal judge to strike the Oct. 28 date as prosecutors continue discussions with Rezko that could affect his sentence. Schar asked for a status hearing in the case for sometime in December.
The Associated Press adds:
The motion filed Monday afternoon signals the key fundraiser for Governor Rod Blagojevich and other Illinois politicians may be telling the government what he knows about corruption in state government.
It asks U.S. District Judge Amy J. St. Eve to delay the sentencing indefinitely “while the parties engage in discussions that could affect their sentencing postures,” all but an acknowledgment that Rezko is talking.
The Sun-Times opined the delay “could be good news” for Obama, “since a sentencing just days before the election would likely generate unfavorable publicity about his former fund-raiser.”
Update: Rob Wildeboer of Chicago Public Radio reported October 8, 2008:
The hearing this morning took just a couple minutes as prosecutors and defense attorneys were on the same page. Both sides told the judge they’d like to delay sentencing so they can have more time to talk. But the schedule is open ended as attorneys didn’t ask for a new sentencing date. Bill Ziegelmueller is one of Rezko’s attorneys.
ZIEGELMUELLER: Very simply the parties have agreed to try to work together to agree or otherwise narrow their differences at sentencing and the judge has agreed to give us more time to work towards that end.
Prosecutors may be using that time to ask Rezko questions about possible corruption in Illinois state government. They would likely agree to a shorter sentence if he can provide information for their wide reaching investigation which may go as high as the governor.
Natasha Korecki at the Chicago Sun-Times reported October 9, 2008:
Prosecutors and Rezko lawyers said this morning they did not want to set a future date for sentencing.
Rezko lawyer William Ziegelmueller said they sought the delay to “work together to agree to otherwise narrow differences at sentencing.”
The agreement comes as Rezko is talking to federal prosecutors. …
Ziegelmueller said this morning there was presently no deal in place, otherwise “today would have been different.”
Ziegelmueller said Rezko remains in solitary confinement in the Metropolitan Correctional Center.
Our citizens may be deceived for awhile, and have been deceived; but as long as the presses can be protected, we may trust to them for light.--Thomas Jefferson.

just long enough to make sure Obama is elected by hook & crook!! *sigh*

Is Rezko leading them on just enough to buy the delay until after November 4th? We also have to remember that the Combine is bipartisan, and that Republicans AND Democrats would quite possibly be implicated in regards to Chicago (and possibly Iraq… al-Sammarae & Auchi). Does Big Tony know enough about contracting fraud/graft in Iraq to warrant favorable treatment from “both sides of the aisle”?
Oh please , what a cliff hanger . Promise him freedom and a home in Iraq if he tells all by Nov 1 ~ who can take this suspense are we going to end up with Joe Biden as President ? Better then Obama but not my choice Obama’s. 5 Hours worth of work inside his Law Firm for Rezko and no backlash , just a boneheaded mistake comment ? I am sure Tony could take down Obama . This is not fair ! Do 18 Million people count for anything ?
just wondering how Tony’s family is surviving these days b/c it seems Tony did not have money. There may be secret money that we don’t know about but publicly the man does not seem to have lots of money. somebody must be providing support to Tony’s family and/or paying for their expenses.
“Is Rezko leading them on just enough to buy the delay until after November 4th?”
No, I think he’s got the goods. But Fitz is gonna make damned sure his ducks are in a row before he moves.
Sucks for us, of course.
You’d think he’s just ride out the jail sentence and wait until Obama pardons him. Rezko must be kind of afraid obama won’ be elected.
he’d,not he’s
Not just big Tony who knows..consider Chalabi and Maliki… what a way to start a first term…
