If ever an Obamaganda campaign ploy is destined for blowback, this is the one—in so many ways.
“Citizen of the world” Obama now wants to tell everyone they should “Buy American”—not exactly an original thought, just Google the phrase for yourself.
Oh, by the way, vote for him. That’s like saying “Take Out the Trash, Vote for Obama” or “A Chicken in Every Pot, Vote for Obama”. (Sorry, so many nifty examples come to mind.)
Greg Sargent over at TPM Election Central writes that the new logo—”Buy American, Vote Obama”—will be rolled out today in Pennsylvania in the Obama campaign’s response to (”to poke fun at”) presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain’s “recent claim that he would rather hear the roar of ‘50,000 Harleys’ than the cheering of 200,000 Berliners.”
In RBO’s opinion, the attempt to mock and jab at McCain conveys other not-so-subtle messages.
Buy American? Where have we heard that before?
Well, there is the Buy American Act, which the Wikipedia tells us “was passed in 1933 by the U.S Congress, mandating preferences for the purchase of domestically produced goods in direct procurements by the United States government.”
Likewise, perfectly suited to the Obama way, the president is allowed to make an end run around this. Again, from the Wikipedia, we find:
The President has the authority to waive the Buy American Act within the terms of a reciprocal agreement or otherwise in response to the provision of reciprocal treatment to U.S. producers. Under the 1979 General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) Government Procurement Code, the U.S.-Israel Free Trade Agreement, the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement, and the World Trade Organization (WTO) 1996 Agreement on Government Procurement (GPA), the United States provides access to the government procurement of certain U.S. agencies for goods from the other parties to those agreements. However, the Buy American Act was excluded from the GPA’s coverage.
Yup! You got it! The US policy is to “Buy American” unless the president wants to waive it in favor of all those trade agreements. Remember that Obama NAFTA policy “refinement” back during the primaries? Don’t think Obama would not do some “refining” of his “Buy American” campaign when the time comes? Fools!
Can we say pandering, as well? Since the Obama campaign plans to roll “Buy American” out in Pennsylvania, part of Middle America, does no one besides RBO see this as an attempt to pander to American workers? Ever heard of “Made in the U.S.A.”? Fools!
And, by the way, wonder how this Obamaganda campaign is going to play with all those world leaders who thought Sen. Obama really is the “citizen of the world” he purports to be.
To be perfectly honest, if they haven’t figured out by now that Sen. Waffles, well, waffles, they’ve not been paying attention. In true Obamaspeak, he never means what he says and rarely says what he means. Fools!
Bottom line? “Buy American, Vote Obama” will have just about as long a shelf life once Obama got into the Oval Office as arugula. “Buy American” will just disappear into the trash bin along with “hope” and “change”. Fools!
Update #1: First of all, see Uppity Woman’s post Buy Obama and Wear Him Too!. (That woman can’t keep her paws off anything!)
Second, FreedomFairy, reliably ever on the job, going places where the rest of us fear to tread, offers us this Works Progress Administration (WPA) logo “created in April 1935 by Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s presidential order, and activated with congressional funding in July of that year (the U.S. Congress funded it annually but did not set it up).”
Finally, away from the keyboard for most of the day, RBO just happened to see more than a few reminders on the highways and byways. Does this look familiar? With a bit of one—the WPA logo—and a little more of the other—the Chrysler trademark—some totally inspired Obamagandist came up with another “original” Barky brand.
Update #2: Ed Morrissey at Hot Air first headlined with O look! Another O logo!:
The Barack Obama campaign learned one lesson from its Vero Possumus fiasco, and apparently only one lesson: Latin is elitist. They still haven’t figured out that drawing fancy logos for a candidate reminds people of high-school elections.
Also casting about for the source of Obama’s latest ripoff, Morrissey sees a resemblance to the Flying A service logo.
To quote Tom Maguire at Just One Minute:
Buy American, Mock Obama
The Obama campaign pushes back against their own excellent European Adventure with their latest “Buy American, Vote Obama” campaign. How goofy is this? TigerHawk says “transparently inauthentic”. Dan Riehl says “A very dumb move”.
I’ll just settle for “Huh? John McCain is not American?”.
Update #3: The Obamagandists really were not counting on all the pure mirth and chuckling they would inspire with this latest O-fiasco. Reading through comments on Uppity’s crosspost at No Quarter provides another possible trademark snatch—as well as subliminal messaging—Pepsi!
Update #4: And the suggestions just keep on rolling in. Katiebird at The Confluence asks “Where’s the Beef?” Pretty darn close, we’d say.

Update #5: And then there are elusive visuals that dance around the edges of one’s memory before they come into focus.
Our citizens may be deceived for awhile, and have been deceived; but as long as the presses can be protected, we may trust to them for light.--Thomas Jefferson.

Since I’m a fool, it will come as no surprise that I don’t understand why this bothers you.
Would you rather Obama said DON’T buy American?
I think we are seeing the strange humor of David Axelrod. Harley Davidson is one of the great “brands” of the world much less of the United States. As an ad man and marketer, Mr. Axelrod would find ripping off Harley’s macho “brand” and applying it to his client acceptable and humorous. This is making fun of buying American, macho Harley owners, and Sen McCain’s undeniable swaggering history as a Navy pilot. The Obama campaign is making fun of several “brands” at once that Americans are proud to call their own. By ridiculing “buy American” when this country is hemorrhaging jobs, overt in your face masculinity and bravery of military pilots, and the rebel image of the Harley, the Obama campaign again is showing their overweening elitism and contempt for average Americans idealism and imagery. They are also dangerously highlighting everything that Senator Obama is not. I hope Harley threatens a copyright infringement lawsuit.
Just what does Obama mean when he says “Buy American”? That could mean Indonesian, Kenyan, or possibly Canadian, or it may mean 57 states , whatever that is.
Where do we get something that was made in America?
We can’t even figure out if Obama himself was made
in America. Maybe he should sew a label on himself.
The bigger emphasis, it seems to me, is to “brand” OBAMA HIMSELF as “American”, in a direct rebuttal to the swirling controversy about his birth certificate, his background and his loyalties. In other words, “Buy Obama, Buy American” is the the meta message.
The “unveiling” in America’s Heartland is no accident either.
Obama can’t close the deal there.
Greg Sargent and Josh Marshall are a pair of ninnies who lost my respect when they defended Dave Schuster’s, or what ever his name is, “pimping Chelsea” comments. At the same time there was a diary at the Orange Cheetoh mouthing the same sentiment as Sargent. At least that writer had the sense to admint, after several comments by Hillary defenders, that maybe, just maybe, MSNBC went beyond the pale with the Hillary bashing.
Talking points Memo and Daily Kos have the odor of used gym socks left to fester at the bottom of a gym bag all summer vacation. Sargent just managed to lose the biker vote for Obama.
This campaign reminds me of how Wal-Mart hoodwinked the American consumers with their “bait” (Made in U.S.A.), and then transitioned to the “switch” (who the hell cares if it wasn’t made in the U.S.A., it’s cheap). Americans have been stuffing their attics, basements, garages, and self-storage rentals with inexpensive and inferior goods ever since.
It would be nice if Barky SoetorObama would provide definitive documentation that HE is American! Regardless, I’m NOT buying.
“Buy America” pandering? You can bet your behind on it.
One of His Highness’ mantra has been the need to accept the “reality of the globalization of our economy“, the need to stop the “tendencies of nativist sentiment, protectionism” of our working class. [In The Brookings Institution, 4/2006]. He has unequivocally expressed how “I love the market, I’m a pro-growth, pro-free market guy”. [cnnmoney.com]
Obama, as a member of The Hamilton Project, made clear his intentions to work against “protectionism”.
For him to now raise the banner of “buy America” is just another gimmick, intended for his blind followers, those who will follow him even if he is caught kissing with Bin Laden.

What I’ve found when researching Obama’s campaign promises is that there is typically a bill already introduced into congress. (not necessarily his).
For instance, Obama has talked about responsible fatherhood in his campaign. The Responsible Fatherhood Act is now in congress. It’s not what he makes it out to be and it’s grabbing funds from our Social Security.
Buy American is also currently in congress. Introduced 2-14-07 by Senator Feing0ld (S. 581 IS). The bill is to amend the Buy American Act to increase the requirement for American -made content, to tighten the waiver provisions, and for other purposes.
Substantially All- Articles, materials, or supplies shall be treated as made substantially all from articles, materials, or supplies mined, produced, or manufactured in the United States, if the cost of the domestic components of such articles, materials, or supplies exceeds 75 percent of the total cost of all components of such articles, materials, or supplies.
In effect, the government will buy American regardless of cost.
That sounds patriotic in theory. But it will cost Americans through extra taxes because it’s not responsible spending.

This statement is even more explosive in the wake of the controversy over his birth certificate and possible dual citizenship in Indonesia and his family roots in Kenya. He’s a mirky messiah.

He wants us to “buy” that he is an American. He wanted us to believe he was from Kansas, not Indonesia. Now he’ll settle for bamboozling us that he cares about lunch-bucket Dems.
I think Annie Oakley’s remark is squarely on the mark: ignore any controversy about bogus birth certificates, connections to foreign cultures or religions, slimy Chicago history, think America=Obama. He’s not closing the deal with blue-collar workers [the very people Obama's supporters said they didn't need] and using an American logo is suppose to sell the brand.
Not working. And if we’re suppose to believe this is an answer to McCain and his Harley gig, it’s incredibly lame.
We don’t need a seal, a logo or a salute. We need a leader and that’s something Barack Obama cannot fake. Axelrod’s opinion of the American public must be incredibly low–we’re all fools or blind or too busy to notice: Hello??? The Emperor’s ass is showing.
Surprise!
Obama looked like a backbencher at Saddleback. The Obama train wreck continues.

Of course we all want to buy American. The point is that Obama does not believe in buying American. Maybe you have not being following this blog for long. Obama believes that buying American is “nativist protectionism”, it goes against the interests of the global free market.
Obama’s new found “patriotism” is only a gimmick, pandering, utilitarian, it has a short shelf life (will expire on election day).
That’s the point.
Hmmm…looks alot like the NASA Wings logo. Or this: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/131/357038260_cb5e3de4c2.jpg?v=0
