In what Gateway Pundit described as his “citizen of the world approach”, in his Friday, August 8, 2008, statement on the “Grave Situation in Georgia”, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) left “America’s ally Georgia to fend for itself”:
I strongly condemn the outbreak of violence in Georgia, and urge an immediate end to armed conflict. Now is the time for Georgia and Russia to show restraint, and to avoid an escalation to full scale war. Georgia’s territorial integrity must be respected. All sides should enter into direct talks on behalf of stability in Georgia, and the United States, the United Nations Security Council, and the international community should fully support a peaceful resolution to this crisis.
John Hinderaker at Power Line Blog commented August 9, 2008:
[Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)] has strongly and unequivocally come out in support of our ally Georgia, while placing the onus for the war squarely where it belongs, on Russia. In this, he has aligned himself with our most loyal European allies. Obama, on the other hand, issued the sort of vapid statement that would ingratiate him with the State Department while not requiring any distraction from his Hawaii vacation.
Have no fear! By Friday, August 9, 2008, Sen. Obama was, in the words of Gateway Pundit, sounding “McCainish”:
I condemn Russia’s aggressive actions and reiterate my call for an immediate ceasefire… Russia must stop its bombing campaign, cease flights of Russian aircraft in Georgian airspace, and withdraw its ground forces from Georgia.
Just in case you thought that this story has a happy ending, there’s more (there’s always more).
Ed Morrissey at Hot Air reported yesterday, August 13, 2008, on comments made the night before on MSNBC’s Hardball by Susan Rice, Obama’s top foreign policy adviser, whom he says “wander[ed] far outside reality”:
“John McCain shot from the hip, [with a] very aggressive, very belligerent statement,” she said. “He may or may not have complicated the situation.”
Morrissey commented:
I understand that Rice wants to spin this for Obama, but even this is flat-out ridiculous. McCain didn’t “shoot from the hip” — unlike Obama, he actually knew the situation and understood its implications. In fact, one need look no further for confirmation of this than Obama’s later statements, in which he agreed with McCain’s original statement on the subject.
