The Boston Globe’s Binyamin Appelbaum wrote June 27, 2008, that presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) “has campaigned on a promise to create an Affordable Housing Trust Fund that could give developers an estimated $500 million a year.”
Appelbaum commented that this was a “[g]rim proving ground for Obama’s housing policy.” Sen. Obama “endorsed subsidies for private entrepreneurs to build low-income units. But, while he garnered support from developers, many projects in his former district have fallen into disrepair.”
Sen. Obama’s political patron and personal real estate fairy, convicted political fixer Antoin “Tony” Rezko, is not the only one in his past to have connections to Chicago’s slum housing.
Chicago Tribune reporters Jason Grotto and Laurie Cohen added July 5, 2008, that close campaign adviser Valerie Jarrett “stands at the center of Chicago’s controversial efforts to redevelop public housing.”
Jarrett has pushed to integrate new developments by limiting the number of residents, mostly poor and black, who can live in the new communities. From the beginning, that stance clashed with efforts by residents and housing advocates to ensure the number of units set aside for the poor was as large as possible.
Got that? Can’t have too many poor black people living in new developments. Bad for the ‘hood.
Since 1995, Jarrett has been a high ranking executive at Habitat Co., a real estate firm tasked by a federal judge to ensure the CHA ends segregation in public housing.
The company decides how many public, affordable and market-rate units will be built at each site, approves the budgets and helps negotiate the contracts. In some cases, Jarrett, who became chief executive officer of Habitat last year, has personally signed off on the location of public housing units inside the new developments.
Habitat argues that to integrate public housing it must attract middle-class families, who will not buy into a development that includes too many poor people.
The ChiTrib reporters describe Jarrett as “a former top official in Mayor Richard Daley’s administration.” Surprise! They failed to mention a few details about Jarrett’s long and close relationship with both Sen. Obama and his wife, Michelle Robinson Obama.
On January 29, 2008, RBO/RW wrote:
An April 22, 2007, Chicago Tribune biographical profile relates that in summer 1991 a “young Sidley Austin attorney named Michelle Robinson” interviewed with Valerie Jarrett, who was then Mayor Richard Daley’s deputy chief of staff. Reporters Christi Parsons, Bruce Japsen and Bob Secter reported that, before accepting the subsequent job offer, Michelle Robinson said that first “her fiance”, Barack Obama, “the independent-minded community activist [who] had privately expressed his political ambitions”, wanted to meet with Jarrett.
What followed was a Chicago dinner meetup by Jarrett, Robinson and Obama:
This job would put his wife-to-be squarely in the offices of the man whose father had perfected the Democratic machine.
“My fiance wants to know who is going to be looking out for me and making sure that I thrive,” Jarrett recalled Robinson telling her. …
At the end of the evening, Jarrett turned to Barack and asked, “Well, did I pass the test?” Obama smiled, put his head down, closed his eyes and said, “Yeah, you passed the test.
That was the start of a long relationship that has paid off politically for Barack Obama, connecting him to Daley’s inner circle.
From summer 1991 until sometime in 1993, Michelle Obama was well-positioned at Chicago’s City Hall.
Michelle Obama’s “close and lasting friendships with Jarrett and many other top Daley aides, including former Corporation Counsel Susan Sher and David Mosena, who was the mayor’s chief of staff when Michelle Obama first joined his administration”, have endured, with their careers “frequently overlapped, and together they make up a network that reaches into virtually every aspect of Chicago politics.
“After leaving City Hall, Jarrett went on to lead the Chicago Transit Authority. She recruited Michelle Obama to the transit agency’s citizen advisory committee. Mosena, who now is president of the Museum of Science and Industry, served with Obama on the Commission on Chicago Landmarks. …
City Hall records show Michelle Obama, then still named Robinson, began work as a $60,000-a-year mayoral assistant in September of 1991. She didn’t stay long in the mayor’s office. Within weeks, Daley promoted Jarrett to run the new Department of Planning and Development. Obama followed.
She had no background in economic development, but Obama served as a troubleshooter for Jarrett.
After only 18 months at the city, she left to launch the Chicago chapter of Public Allies, a group that sought to build future community leaders by arranging apprenticeships for young adults with non-profit organizations. Barack Obama was on the founding board of Public Allies, and it was he who recommended his new wife for the job as the Chicago chapter’s first executive director, recalled Paul Schmitz, the current president of the group, which is now headquartered in Milwaukee and has chapters in many cities.
Bottom line? By early 1993, Michelle Obama had a good working knowledge of Chicago’s infrastructure and topography, having worked as a mayoral assistant, with the Chicago Transit Authority, and in the Department of Planning and Development. Three years later, in 1996, when she left Public Allies for a position at the University of Chicago, her husband, Barack Obama, was serving or soon to serve with the Illinois State Senate. By this time, the Obamas each had, at minimum, four and half years of street-level experience in Chicago.
Among other things, Valerie B. Jarrett has served as treasurer of Barack Obama’s leadership political action committee (PAC), the Hopefund.
Oh, and let’s not forget, Jarrett is the vice chair of Chicago’s 2016 Summer Olympics bid committee.
There’s just so much more that could be added here. The number of unsavory and questionable associations both Obamas hold within the Chicago community appear to be legion.
Update: A reliable source informs that Valerie Jarrett’s father is the former head of the Chicago Housing Authority. The September 17, 2001, issue of Jet magazine reported:
Former Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) chief Vincent Lane was recently sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison and three years of supervised release for lying to banks to get more than $2 million in loans.
Lane, 58, received national recognition for his innovations at the CHA and was once touted as a candidate for mayor and a finalist for federal housing secretary.
A federal jury in March convicted Lane on two counts of making false statements in connection with a $1.9 million refinancing of the Continental Plaza shopping center located in Chicago.
He also was found guilty of lying to Chicago’s South Shore Bank to get three loans exceeding $600,000 in 1993 and 1994, when he was CHA chairman.
The charges, however, did not involve his public duties, but were connected to his work as a private developer.
Lane took the helm of the CHA in 1988 and was praised as a visionary for his police sweeps of gang-infested buildings and commitment to tenant management. But in 1995, Lane and other members of the CHA board resigned amid allegations of pervasive waste and fraud, and federal officials took over daily operations.

Man-o-man, how the heck do you jump from a mayor office flunkie to being the wife of a
state senator! In 93′ Bill and Hillary were in the Whitehouse!
Does anyone here know how to find out which bank in Hawaii employed Obama’s mom??
One more thing, I have been looking into Obama’s bundlers and one is big construction
outfit from Missouri(as in ClaireMckaskill). Obama is being surrounded by people who might
be of some help for the 2012′Olympics. There are also lots of telecommunications outfits,
some out of Dubai.
I had never heard of HUD turning public housing over to private receiverships like Habitat before. Habitat ran CHA from 95 to 99, and then it was turned over to Mayor Daley, who appointed Sharon Gist Gilliam and RHAM EMANUEL to run it.
In 1992, HUD started HOPE VI (I don’t know what happened to hopes 1-5) to survey public housing and decide how much needed razed. In 1999, the regulation was changed so that low income housing didn’t need to be replaced one to one. In 1999, a HUD survey showed 80% public housing residents saying their housing was good. In its first 8 years, HOPE VI demolished 100K units and had 35K more slated, even though the original HUD survey only identified 86K units needing to be demolished.
The program mandates using federal funds to “leverage privatization.” This could also be described as using taxes to subsidize private developers. Sorry I don’t have the timeframe at my fingertips, but we’ve spent $4.5 Billion on this program, and that is not an up-to-date number.
HUD is a black hole of profiteering.
Valerie Jarrett was also on the board at University of Chicago, where MO worked. I believe, if we ever have time to work through all the HUD and pension fraud, we will be faced with an even bigger fraud mountain to climb: healthcare fraud.
Did you catch the connection with Giannoulias and Boris Stratievsky? Broadway was making loans to him. Saw a story yesterday in which Stratievsky sold a property to Matthew A. O’Malley. It went through a strawman, Jeffry Duerwachter, who bought the property for $3.72m and sold it the same day for $4.1. But the kicker is that city pension funds where partly used in the purchase. DV Urban Realty Partners, co-owned by Mayor Daley’s nephew, Robert Vanecko, and Allison S. Davis, who got $68m of the city’s pension funds to direct.
And this is while the world is watching them! Can you imagine what it would be like if these guys weren’t having to watch themselves or had a get out of jail free card in the White House? Good grief. Dear Patrick Fitzgerald, “Peddle faster.”
I mean PEDAL faster!
it is pitiful the way Obama and his “advisors” take care of the poor!!is not VALERIE JARRETT the same VP of HABITAT which was in charge of GROV OARS FROM 2001-2006 and then the fed.gov took over GROV PARC in 2006??something like 1800 code violations..maint.worker had stated the apts. didn’t have enough $$$
to buy steel-wool to cover rat-holes but yet Jarrett can co-host $28,000 (2,800) fund raisers for OBAMAS in her “rat-free” home!!no woder Obama wants the Affordable Housing Trust fund for his friends Jarrett and Davis to get $500 million a year…Jarrett should be ashamed of herself and Obama has no ties to “special interest” groups oh the $175,000 REZKO DAVIS AND JARRETT have given him can it be the same as the “pay-to-play” deals still going on???I don’t see how Jarrett can still be a developer after one of her “communities” was taken over by feds???even more sad is how these developers get more $$$ to “redo” these projects after it is the developers fault in the first place that they become “slums”!!!
on the subject of the hospitals is it true the UNIV. of Chicago has been accused of charging “minorities” 3 1/2 times more than they charge people with private insurance??and this is supposedly a “non-profit” hospital but where Ms.Michelle”s salary jumped almost $200,00 after obama became Senator???and this hospital made a “PROFIT” in the millions at the end of last-year??yes sir Obama and daley and Davis and Jones (whose brother committed suicide) (corruption involved?) sure look out for their Black community” by fleecing them!!!so much for his “welfare” reform and helping
neighborhoods in trouble…Obama needs to admit it is not the “white greed” that keeps people down it is all the “corrupt”people and developers and politicians who do that….DALEY, JARRETT AND DAVIS AND JONES REZKO AND ALI ATA finance authority (gave Obama $5,000)?? in june of 2003…don’t forget Penny Pritzer (hyatt family)whose defunked SUPERIOR BANK IN 2002 cost taxpayers a billion dollars and she owes FDIC $450 million but maybe Obama will “forgive” her of that!!!and she is on his FINANCE COMMITTEE…KIND OF SIMILAR TO JOHN DALEY ON COOK COUNTY BOARD FINANCE…i ALL THIS TIME i THOUGHT cHICAGO WAS A BIG CITY NOW WITH ALL THESE hands IN THE JAR “it is a SMALL WORLD”….
I was involved with fixing the Public Housing system in Allegheny County in PA. I lived in the Projects then. Several tenants sued the Public Housing System and they won. The County Housing Autority tore some buildings down but remodled them. They did not put middle income people in there what they did was get rid of all the dope dealers and anyone who wanted to destroy it. They added police patrols and made the playgrounds safe for kids. What they got in return was this Housing Auturity went from being right ahead of Chigico (the worst in the Country} to being right behind Alanta{the best in the Country}. Twelve years later the Projects are clean beautiful and it is the tenants that keep it that way. The kids and adults actually use the garbage cans instead of littering. Poor people will take care of what they have but like with everyone else there is good and bad in everyone. I am not surprised by Michelle and Obama being involved in this. They could care less about poor folks of any race.
A Reliable Source? It’s not like this is any big secret. Why can’t you take two minutes, and find out for yourself?
What your source was remembering is that Jarrett’s grandfather was Robert Taylor, quite possibly the nation’s first black architect, and a legitimately inspiring figure. Taylor served on the board of the CHA until 1950, when he resigned in protest of the CHA’s refusal to consider integrating public housing. Despite the calamitoushousing development that would later bear his name, Taylor himself was scrupulously honest – the very model of a hard-working, patriotic American, and someone whom we all can honor.
Not that any of that excuses Jarrett for her sins, anymore than any parental misdeeds ought to reflect on her. In America, we generally let people stand or fall on their own merits, instead of visiting the sins of the fathers upon their children to the third generation. So attack Jarrett for what she’s done, not for whsipered rumors of associations.
